The Curriers' Millennium Bursary

The Company embraced the 21st Century in a number of ways, one of which was to establish a Bursary for a primary healthcare professional to carry out research or personal study into ways of improving healthcare amongst the under-privileged sectors of London's population.

Although it was originally aimed at General Practitioners, the scope of the Bursary was widened in 2003 and attracted submissions from nurses, midwives, mental health workers, a pharmacist, an opthalmologist as well as GPs. Since its inception, the following Bursaries have been awarded:

2009

Improving Cancer Survivorship Care for East London: an investigation into best practice at leading centres of excellence in USA.  (£2,650 – Consultant Physiotherapist &  Clinical Occupational Therapist)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; a clinical tool for monitoring patients following an exacerbation. (£4,648 – Nurse/Research Manager & Respiratory Consultant)

Funding for 3-day training courses on palliative care of patients and end-of-life needs for a total of 40 Community Health Care Assistants. (£5,942 - St Francis Hospice, Romford)

2008

A Health Literacy Project for traveller communities in Inner London. (Joint Applicants: Registered Nurse / Learning & Development Specialist - £3,700)

An investigation of the language skills of nursery-aged children living in Tower-Hamlets, including bilingual speakers or children from non-English speaking backgrounds. (Speech & Language Therapist - £8,400)
2007

A qualitative study on the effectiveness of computer-based interventions to meet teenagers' sexual health needs. (Focus group in Central London - GP - £4,400)

A study of clinicians’ perceptions on the introduction of QFT-G in the diagnosis of active TB. (Kingston - TB Specialist Nurse - £4,400)

Language and impact on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with patients whose first language is not English. (Newham, E London - Nurse Consultant in CBT - £1,500)
2006
Research into the incidence and effects of alcohol abuse amongst those suffering from learning disabilities across all London Boroughs. The recipients were unfortunately unable to gain ethical approval for their study, which was cancelled and all bursary monies refunded in full.
2005
A pilot scheme to establish a clinic on mens’ health in a deprived area of Westminster, to carry out health screening and provide health and dietary advice to men.  (Nurse/health visitor - £5,000)

A single Bursary of up to £10,000 will be awarded annually, subject to funding availability, following an open competition held in April and May. Applicants may be from any speciality within the general definition of primary healthcare.
